East Hampton Beach House

East Hampton, NY

Perched on a bluff in East Hampton where Georgica Pond catches the ocean breeze, Woody House is a study in how architecture can renew a historic property while respecting its past. Originally built in the 1930s as a guesthouse for Juan Trippe, the founder of Pan Am, the modest house had fallen into disrepair before its careful restoration. A freestanding octagonal tower, a library wing, and a Chippendale-style bridge were added, stitching the landscape together while enhancing the home’s connection to its site. Inside, light floods a double-height entrance hall, dancing across stenciled “rugs” on wood floors as rooms unfold in quiet layers of warmth and informality. Every gesture—whether a pergola hovering in the salt air or a bridge that sails above the garden—speaks to reinvention and whatever the next chapter may hold for this ever-changing house.
