Preserving the centuries-old clapboard and timber framing of this Bellport Barn was of utmost importance. To make it livable year-round, the exterior was sheathed with insulating panels and then re-clad in barn red clapboard. Inside, the spaces are organized by the barn’s structural bent bays, with soaring double height volumes lined with trapeze nets for the children to play. Found objects and materials form an unexpected patchwork, including a copper lined bathroom. Two new barnlike structures – a guest house and an indoor pool – were added and sited so that, together with the barn, they frame the outdoor space that has become the heart of the property.
